Just before the Easter break I had the pleasure of taking part in the game art conference day. Hosted by our lecturers at DMU we were treated to a whole day of workshops in aid of improving our blog writing.
There were a whole number of different workshops we could choose to attend throughout the day. The first workshop I attended was focused on the use of images and visual language in our blogs. I found this one especially helpful when writing my post on art direction. It made me realise how easy it is to actually be descriptive about an image if you take the time to analyse it properly.
A few of the sessions were “have a go” sessions in which we could try out some of the techniques that had just been taught. I did find those really useful to just catch up on my history task writing.
The highlight of the day was a result of the last session I attended which was actually an accident. I ended up attending a seminar hosted by our visual design teachers Mitch and Chris on visual language and image analysis. On the surface it sounds quite similar to the first event I attended but Mitch and Chris went about it in a whole other way. There was lots of quick fire audience participation which I found really engaging.
Towards the end of the session we had to describe a scene for a film with creative writing, this was a real test of me as I haven’t done any sort of creative writing since early high school. However I actually found it quite enjoyable to be challenged in new ways.
The icing on the cake was presented at the end of the day. Mitch took one of our pieces of creative writing and painted the scene in under two hours. It was incredible to see what can be communicated using creative writing ! Also the quality of the painting for just two hours of work was astounding. I found it really inspiring.
