New week new project! At the beginning of this week we were
put into groups and set the Alice off the map project.
Our brief is set within that of the actual competition
hosted by Game City in Nottingham:

One difference is we have been set our groups by the tutors
and we have to submit our projects a little sooner than the deadline for the
competition itself.
Our group projects will be submitted under the 3D Category,
I’m very excited for what this project may bring, I have had
the good fortune of being put in a group of people that I think I can work very
well with.
Here are the links to my team
member’s blogs where they will also be documenting progress on the level.

We all have a certain preference to areas of work, which
seem to work well with each other.
Josh and Sam both would like to develop their character art,
Kieran would like to work on environment art and props, and I would also like
to work on environment art some time during this project. At the moment some
engine work needs doing and I am perfectly happy to put environment art to the
side for a while and learn some more about UE4. I really enjoyed exploring all
the engine has to offer during the container city project and I’m pretty
excited to see what more can be done with it.
Also this week we had a visit from the creator of Sky Saga
(Link to the game)
He came to talk a little bit about the upcoming game, I
found his lecture really engaging and I feel it provided me with some
interesting insight into the game industry in general. He had a few things to
say about the thought process behind some less popular industry tactics. For
instance I had no idea that distributing DLC was also used as an incentive to
help deliver patches to games before downloading updates was as easy as it is
today.
He also talked a bit about the monetisation of the game,
which is a touchy subject currently as “feemium” games are coming under fire.
All in all very interesting visit and definitely worthwhile
attending.
