Now the film room project is over this week I have been
working on the new project set for us.
The Turret Project.
I am quite excited for this project because we get to create
a game asset that has some real in game functionality.
The tutors have kindly set up a blueprint system for us to
work with. A turret comprised of 3 parts automatically tracks you in game, and
fires projectiles at you. All we have to do is replace the parts with our own
models.
The 3 parts the base, the pivot, and the actual gun itself
with a barrel.
The base model looks like a pretty generic gun on a stand.
The tutors have also made an example turret to show us how a fully fleshed out
idea might look using the template.
The thing is as long as the parts have the correct pivot
points set up, they don’t really have to resemble the placeholder parts. This
means that we can get really creative with this project.
Mike Kelly showed us the design process he went through to
get to the end turret design, so I will be trying to mimic it during this
project. He started by making a photo bashing kit of interesting silhouettes
and making many variations.
Of course I've started the project by trawling through Pinterest,
I sometimes wonder where we would be without such an incredible resource.
At the beginning of the week I didn't really have any ideas
on what to focus on, so I was just bashing generic gun and turret silhouettes
together. This didn't lead to any particularly interesting results so I changed
tack.
To give my turret a little twist and take it away from the
generic, I am going take inspiration from Japanese siege weaponry and rockets.
